Immediately after the war in Southeast Asia, several thousand Hmong, Khmu, Lahu, Mien and other ethnic groups escaped the country and relocated to the United States. The Wausau area became home to many of these refugees. For family members and friends that were not able to leave, their primary refuge remains the rural areas of Laos. Today it is nearly impossible for them to immigrate, requiring them to live under current conditions.
The People to People Project initiative was created at the request of the Wausau Hmong community to reach out to the less fortunate members of the world's Hmong and other ethnic groups residing in Laos. In 2006, People to People Project, Inc. became a volunteer-directed 501(c)(3) tax deductible organization.
